D-Day 80 in Shavington-cum-Gresty
Join us in commemorating the 80th anniversary of D-Day with a series of special events organised by Shavington-cum-Gresty Parish Council.
Richard Pryce Hughes Commemorative Booklet
To begin the commemoration, a booklet highlighting the heroic story of local figure Richard Pryce Hughes has been meticulously researched by historian Mark Potts and will be distributed to households in the Parish, and given to all children at Shavington Primary School.
D-Day Exhibition at Shavington-cum-Gresty Village Hall
Saturday 1 June 11-5pm
Sunday 2 June 11-4pm
Visit the D-Day and WWII exhibition at Shavington-cum-Gresty Village Hall on Saturday, June 1st (11am-5pm) and Sunday, June 2nd (11am-4pm). Curated by local historian Mark Potts, this exhibition focuses on the stories of local heroes and the local area during the war. Mark Potts will also lead an insightful talk on Air Raids in Crewe and Nantwich at 2pm on Saturday 1 June, at the exhibition.
Bring the little ones along for a special trail designed just for them! It’s a fantastic opportunity for children to engage with history in a fun and interactive way. Entry to the exhibition is completely free!
Beacon Lighting Event
Thursday 6 June 9pm
On Thursday 6 June, join us at 9pm for a poignant Beacon Lighting ceremony on St. Mark’s Church field, following national guidance. This event will include the reading of the International Tribute and also poetry written by students at Shavington Primary School and Shavington Academy.
Community Activities for D-Day 80
Before the ceremony, be sure to admire the beautiful artwork that will be displayed outside Shavington-cum-Gresty Village Hall that has been created by Year 5 children at Shavington Primary School.
Local D-Day Veteran Interview
Look out on our social media to hear firsthand accounts from local D-Day veteran Bernard Morgan, interviewed by Shavington Academy students.
This event has been filmed to create a lasting historic record, ensuring that the bravery and sacrifices of our community are never forgotten.
Funding for these events has been generously provided by Shavington-cum-Gresty Parish Council and through the Cheshire East Levelling Up funding.
Let’s come together to honour and remember the heroes of D-Day. We look forward to seeing you there!
