The Heritage Champion is…

Richard Pryce Hughes

Richard Pryce Hughes (1906–1942)

Richard Pryce Hughes was born at Gresty Lodge in Shavington-cum-Gresty, the family home of the Hughes family. A talented sportsman, ranch manager and pilot, he later moved to Argentina to manage the family’s cattle ranch before volunteering for service with the Royal Canadian Air Force during the Second World War. Determined to fly despite being older than the preferred age for pilot training, he even reduced his recorded age when enlisting.

Richard is especially important to Shavington-cum-Gresty because of the extraordinary sacrifice he made on 15 April 1942. Returning from a bombing mission over Germany, his Halifax bomber ran critically low on fuel. Realising the danger, he ordered his six crew members to parachute to safety and then remained at the controls, attempting to steer the aircraft away from populated areas and make an emergency landing. Although Richard was killed when the aircraft crashed near Liss Forest in Hampshire, all six of his crew survived.

His courage, selflessness and willingness to give his life to save others make him one of the parish’s most remarkable wartime figures. Today he is commemorated on the Shavington-cum-Gresty War Memorial, the Wybunbury War Memorial, and at his grave in St Chad’s Churchyard, Wybunbury, where he was buried with full military honours.

Remembered as Shavington-cum-Gresty’s “Forgotten Hero”, Richard Pryce Hughes represents the very highest ideals of duty, courage and service, and his story remains an important part of the parish’s heritage.
